Candice Harvey - Intermediate Resource Teacher
This is my 10th year working as the intermediate resource teacher at Grundy School. I feel very blessed to have been hired into Morton schools right after receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education LBS1 from Illinois State University in 2006. I am grew up in Lockport, a southwest suburb of Chicago, but have lived in Bloomington since 2001. Outside of school, I love spending time with friends, family, and my French Bulldog, Harvey.
In 2011, I graduated from Illinois State University with my Masters Degree in Special Education. That same year, I also became the first special education teacher in the school district to become a National Board Certified Teacher. I have a strong belief that good teachers become great teachers through continuing their education and becoming lifelong learners. I actively seek out conferences to attend, professional literature to read, and other avenues to improve my teaching methods.
I have wanted to be a special education teacher since I was young. I have a cousin, Brian, who has autism. Even as a child, I remember playing with Brian and understanding that even though he may learn and communicate differently that he could still learn and communicate. I continued to reach for opportunities to gain experiences working with students with special needs by volunteering in the vocational program while in high school. I went into my freshman year at ISU knowing exactly what I wanted to do. After all these years, I know that being a special educator is my calling.
In my resource room, successes are measured in inches rather than feet. All achievements- big and small- are celebrated. I focus on the learning differences rather the disability. I have a commitment to teach to the whole child so they thrive cognitively, socially, emotionally, and civically.
