Welcome to Fourth Grade
Ms. Jeanie Dennis
Mr. Jon G. Wheat
Welcome to life in the upper wing! The transition from third to fourth grade can be a very challenging one for many students. Students become more responsible for their own learning, more able to complete tasks independently, and see an increase in the material they are required to master. As a result, your student will become a more independent, self-directed learner.
The language arts curriculum incorporates elements of reading, writing, grammar, and spelling. Reading is taught primarily through the use of our new reading series with selected novels used as supplementary material. Grammar is taught using Shurley English in addition to our district-approved language arts series. There is an emphasis on the writing process, specifically the use of the Four-Square Writing Method and how that is used in teaching of paragraph and essay writing.
The science and social studies curricula are quite comprehensive. Students are required to do more technical reading of non-fiction material than in prior grades. The focus of the social studies curriculum is on the geography of the United States. Science is taught using a "spiraled curriculum" process that requires each grade level to cover parts of key concepts in life science, physical science, and Earth science.
The mathematics curriculum covers a wide-range of topics, including all four operations, fractions, geometry, measurement, and probability and statistics. Students must have a solid grasp of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts to have success with the more difficult computation. There is an emphasis on problem solving and reasoning in preparation for state testing.
We look forward to a great year in fourth grade! We look forward to work with your child and you throughout the school year.
